Shooting

Liberal Left Picking on Appleseed.

Not that I have time right now for this, but I have to stand up and make my voice heard.  The liberal left media that tries to run this country from our TV sets and newspapers, has gone and attacked The Appleseed Project.

For those who don’t know, and haven’t read my tab, and take on The Appleseed Project, here is a brief overview of it from my participation.  Appleseed combines rifle shooting instruction with a historical review of the Revolutionary War.  They teach shooting based on the Army Marksmanship Technique using Army Qualification Targets in the standing, sitting and prone positions.  Between instruction and shooting you get to hear, in my opinion, the real events and accurate accounts of what happened at the beginning of the Revolutionary War.  This history review is the non politically correct and watered down version taught in our liberal feel-good public school system.  So don’t be surprised if you learn a few things that you didn’t learn in grade or high school history class.

Anyway, the liberal left is trying to paint this as a militia training recruiting ground, and a TEA Party rally.  Wow! How they could get that is beyond me. What happened at the Carmi, Illinois event that my son and I attended is quite the contrary:  The first thing that was said by Mudcat, the lead instructor or line boss, was that this was NOT a militia meeting or training and he didn’t want to hear about militias from any of the participants.  We also didn’t discuss any political views other than that in the re-accounting of the history of the beginning of the Revolutionary War.

Yea, I know, Fox News isn’t exactly middle of the road.  They, in my opinion, lean right.  But they present both sides and report down the middle.  Fox did a report on Appleseed.  I think it is a fair assessment of what it is and what it is not.  Read it or give this a view if your interested in the truth.

Better yet, visit the Appleseed website and then ATTEND a shoot near you and find out what it really is all about.  If you like to shoot and you like history, then Appleseed is for you.

Don’t let the liberal left destroy the truth.

Are you a Gun Nut?

While watching my screen saver the other day, which is just family pictures and guns, Trooper John noted that he was worried about me.  Scared that I might be a “gun nut”.

Well……

While at Physical Therapy the other day I picked up a copy of Field and Stream, not something I usually do, not that I don’t like Field and Stream, its just not on my list of normal reading. It seems to me to be geared to the yuppie crowd of outdoor hunters and fishermen. That’s just my opinion.

They had a short article in that issue of how to know if you’re a gun nut. It’s pretty good but a bit yuppie for me. Anyway, I adapted the list to fit my own criteria of how you know you’re a gun nut.

You know you’re a gun nut when:* You go to a gun show and you’re afraid you will see an old gun you owned and bust into tears * Hulls and brass on the ground are money to you, not litter. You pick them up even if they are not a caliber you own. * You miss your old hunting dog more than you miss your old school friends * There are only two things that are more fun than a good argument about knock down power or cartridges, and they are both not legal. * There are three men’s hands you would like to shake but cant: John Moses Browning, Charlton Heston and Gunny Sgt Carlos Hathcock. * You wonder why there is nobody like Elmer Keith anymore. * Quigley Down Under is the most awesome gun movie ever made * Used guns are a fine thing: They have a past. They are often good deals and someone has already put the first scratch on them. * You are old enough to remember when you were a kid you took your guns to school and it was considered normal. * You wonder if your grandkids will take as good a care of your guns when your gone as you have taken care of your grandpa’s guns. * Whenever you stop at any gun store, you always buy a box of ammo even if you don’t need it, “just in-case”. * When someone tells you you’re missing a target, you nod politely. If they tell you why you’re missing, you listen carefully. * You try Herb Parson style shots when nobody is looking, with your favorite shotgun. * Guns can’t love you back, but they never complain either. * You never have too many guns!

Ok Trooper John, you got me…………..I am a Gun Nut!

Misc Tuesday Thoughts

Been spending some time thinking about a presentation I will give in July.  Its an hour and a half presentation that I knocked down to an hour for the allotted time only to find out that I have only 30 minutes now.  How do you talk about data management and working with farmers in 30 minutes?

What 2/3 of the talk to I scrap?  I have pretty much decided to scrap it all.  While working on the chopper those days I had considered just cancelling out and not doing it.  But I have changed my mind and am going to attack the topic from a totally different direction.

And that is dangerous…….for me and the audience.

I have a feeling I am going to make a few people mad.  Truth be told, that doesn’t bother me.  Matter of fact, I hope I do.  Those that get mad are the ones that are the “problem” and need to learn to move forward or move out of the way.  The ones that will agree already know what they need to do.

“Walk softly and carry a big stick.”  A 30 minute big stick instead of a hour long toothpick.  Maybe?  Another thought:  ” Bring enough gun” as the slogan says…………….it will be like deer hunting with an Abrams tank!  I got to tone this thing down a bit…………….I will keep you posted.

Speaking of “bring enough gun” I snuck out to the back 40 range and did a bit of sighting in with a couple of the Ruger 10/22 and some different ammo in preparation for going to an Appleseed Shoot soon.  One thing for sure, ammo makes a difference.  I shot my wife’s rifle, that has a 3X40 scope on it as well as my 10/22 with Tech Sights on it.  One scoped one open sights.  The difference in groups at 25 meters speaks for its self……….with one note.  The trigger pull on my rifle is about 1/3 more than hers, something that I will fix in the next few nights.

Over all my 10/22 shot CCI better than the Centurion or Remington Target ammo while my wife’s 10/22 shot the Centurion better than the CCI or Remington.  You can see the groups below, each group is a 10 shot group either off hand or sand bagged.

Lesson learned:  Find the ammo that is right for your gun and shoot it if groups matter.

And groups always matter!   Esp if your wanting the coveted Rifleman Patch!

Frank Lutz Comments on Guns.

I like Frank Lutz. He is pretty well middle of the road and does his research well. He and his research was featured on TV a few nights ago. Listen real close………

This Has Me Thinking

All I know about these pictures is that it is a mail box from somewhere in Tennessee.

I got to have one!

And this is the AK-15.  I sent this out in an email and a lot of people didn’t get it.  There is no such thing.  Someone has photoshopped an AK-47 with an AR-15.

I am told this picture even appeared in a DPMS ad in some magazine or newspaper, but I cant verify that.

This is just so wong……….

No Time Today

No time today for a lengthy post. Just back from vacation, got to get the planter out and get the AC fixed in the Junk Deere and then plant some corn. Ground is ready. I am not.

So here are a few pictures of Knob Creek from Saturday to hold you over until I can get back in the grove.

The Wild Bunch Rides Again!

The Wild Bunch will be replaced by something closer to the Dirty Dozen this Saturday.

Knob Creek Machine Gun Shoot is this weekend.  The Band is back together to make the pilgrimage.  Now that we know what is what, I think some of us are going to burn through a few rounds!  I will have video!!!

Fun Work?

Fun Work.  Do those two words go together?  Well they do when you take a break from working to do some other work that is related to fun.  Make sense?

While working on the hitch, I saw my old shooting bench out by the scrap iron pile.  While I was sitting in front of the torpedo heater breathing in all those great diesel fumes, I also spotted one of three or more old push lawn mower bodies in the scrap pile that is ready to be cut up and hauled off soon.

When I saw the big wheels on the one self propelled mowers I got to thinking about the shooting bench “on sale” in the new Midway catalog.  Yeah, the one on sale for $300 plus.  It had two bicycle wheels on it plus a padded seat.  Whoopee!

While my mind was trying to figure out how to make the hangers for the hitch, I grabbed the bench and brought it in the shop.  I then got the big wheeled lawn mower body and took the wheels off, cut the mounting brackets off and welded them to the front legs of the bench.  Mission accomplished.

While I was at it, I got a new piece of plywood for the deck and cut out a chunk so that you could lean into  your gun when shooting.  Two things then raced through my mind:  First the cut out looked like a “Red Coat” (see Appleseed Page for more info about “Red Coats”).  Second, it also looked like a new seat.  So I mounted it to the old bench seat.

Then with every good invention, you have to try it out………which we did.

Portable, comfortable and significantly below the on sale $300 plus model from Midway.  If it breaks, I don’t have to return it to the manufacture for replacement.  I can just weld it up again.

I don’t know about the other bench, but mine is tricked out with Craftsman hubcaps on the wheels.  Bling, Bling, Bling!

While not as fancy or as finely finished it works.

Anyone give me $250 for it?  $200?

Project Appleseed Page Added

Obama Administration tips its hand

It seems that the Obama Administration has tipped its hand that once health care is taken over by the government, their coming after our guns. AG Eric Holder apparently made a comment to that last week sometime as it is being reported in the major media…………err major gun media that is. The major media is still kissing BHO’s shoes or more correctly his butt, so they are distracted to what is really going on.

I had read this on some of the blogs and didn’t give it much thought until this morning.

Anyway while cruising the morning talk shows I came across some program in which the sickly pastie faced government interviewee (a woman if it matters) was telling the host that “guns give gun owners a false sense of security” and that “gun ownership really wasn’t necessary”.

Well lets talk about a false sense of security: That the cops will be there at your front door when your house is broken into, your robbed, violated, raped, kidnapped or beaten. That the bad guys feel just like the government official and they wont use a gun. That the police will catch the bad buy before they do the same crime again to another person. That the DA will charge and prosecute the bad guys if caught. That if prosecuted they will go to jail. And if they go to jail they will stay there.

No Mrs Sickly Pastie Faced Government Rep, trusting your government is a false sense of security.

Sense the last election the people have voted at the cash register who they trust most, their guns. Gun sales are up at an all time high. There are ammo shortage because of a run on bullets. All of this in the middle of a recession/depression/economic slowdown.

Knob Creek Rocks!

Richard, Scott, Ian, Matthew and I went to Knob Creek Gun Range on Saturday to see first hand the Knob Creek Machine Gun Shoot. All I can say is WOW!!

It was almost unbelievable. Between the vendors, guns, people, mud and massive amount of ammo that was burned, it was truly the most interesting thing I have done in a long, long time. Never have I been in one place with so many people packing side arms and having AR’s and other long guns and “assault weapons” slung over their backs. I felt totally safe.

Besides the machine gun shoot there was machine gun rental where you could rent time on a gun. Prices ranged from $40 for one clip in an AR or AK up to $150 for a belt of 30.06 in the tripod mounted MG to $6000 for one minute on the mini gun (a motorized Gatling gun).

Also there was a very large gun show with all kinds of gun related items and some very unique army “mules” for sale. People were packing ammo out by the “mule” load all day long.

I will have more reports as the weeks go on and as I get my pictures and video sorted out.

Appleseed Shoot

Spent all day Saturday at an Appleseed Shoot with Matthew. What is an Appleseed Shoot, well check out the Revolutionary War Veterans Association and also this Appleseed Website for more details and the whole story.

< ?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

My story is this: It was the best time I have had shooting in a long time. The Appleseed Project is to teach shooting. Key word is teach, and teach they did. The entire line staff were “Riflemen” having been through the training and having shot a score of at least 210 on an Army Qualification Target as well as done training to be a range master and line “boss”.

To say I learn a lot would be an understatement. To say that Matthew didn’t walk away with whole pot load of knowledge to practice with, this being his first ever kind of shoot or instruction would be an understatement as well.

It was not just shooting, it was also a history lesson on the Revolutionary War and specifically April 19, 1775.

How much fun was it for Matthew? Well he told me he wrote an essay at school today on what he did this weekend: Appleseed Shoot. Hopefully he wont get expelled for writing about guns and shooting!!!

This was the best run and most thought through instruction I have seen or been to. That says a lot!!!!

And if you think shooting with iron sights at 25 meters is easy, think again!!!! Having done a bit of shooting long range with a scoped rifle for quite a while off a bench most of the time, it was indeed a big challenge to shoot at those little targets at 25mtrs. It didn’t take me long to figure out that I had a lot of bad habits that I need to correct to make me a better shooter.

But the thing the impressed me the most was that over half the shooters were under the age of 16. And the staff did work their tails off to teach the kids proper safety, gun handling and shooting technique. I was impressed.

I was so impressed that at the end of the day, I joined the RWVA as an associate member and am going to put their website on my site here to help promote the Appleseed Project.

And I will be practicing so that I can shoot “Rifleman” at the next Appleseed Shoot in the area and I will be taking the whole family next time.

Good Job to all the RWVA/Appleseed range people at the Carmi Gun Club Appleseed Shoot!!!

From the Tea Parties Yesterday……..

Ok, I liked it so much I stole it from the Micheal Bane blog.
